Survivors' Basic Pension

Survivors' Basic Pension is given to a spouse or children in the following cases:

1. When an insured person dies.
2. When a formerly-insured person who has an address in Japan and is age 60 to 64 dies.
3. When a person who is receiving Old-age Basic Pension dies.
4. When a person who is eligible to receive Old-age Basic Pension dies.

Note:
The law amendment enabling the reduction of Pension-benefit Qualified Period to 10 years does not apply to 3 and 4. It will require at least 25 years.

Range of survivors who can receive Survivors' Basic Pension

(1) Spouse with a child/children or (2) a child/children, whose livelihood was maintained by an insured person at the time of the person's death

Note:
A child/children must currently is limited to be unmarried and:

Child/children who have not reached the first March 31st after reaching age 18.

Child/children who is under age 20 and has either Disability Grade 1 or 2.

Payment requirement of insurance premiums

On the day before the person dies, the total periods during which insurance premiums were paid and periods during which the premiums were exempted must be 2/3 or more of the National Pension Insured Persons period up to 2 months before the month of the person's death.

However, when the date of death is before April 1, 2026, the premiums payment requirement is considered to be met if there are no periods of unpaid insurance premiums for 1 year up to 2 months before the month of the person's death.

Pension amount (as of April 1, 2022)

The Survivors' Basic Pension amount is fixed; the basic amount is 777,800 yen/year. Up to two children, 223,800 yen is added per child. For the 3rd child and subsequent children, 74,600 yen is added per child.
