Disability Basic Pension

One may receive Disability Basic Pension, when the person is recognized as having Disability Grade 1 or 2 on the date of recognition of disability(Note 2), due to sickness or an injury for which the first medical examination(Note 1) was during a period when the person lived in Japan between age 60 and 64, regardless of whether it is during the National Pension Insured Persons period or after expiration of insurance status. To receive the pension, the insurance premiums payment requirements must be satisfied.

Disability Basic Pension will be paid also for an individual, if his/her symptoms did not meet Disability Grade 1, 2, or 3 requirements on the date of recognition of disability but worsen later and meet the requirements of any of the Grades and he/she requests to be paid by the day before reaching age 65.

Even when the first medical examination was before reaching age 20, he/she may receive Disability Basic Pension if his/her condition is recognized as Disability Grade 1 or 2 when reaching age 20 (or on the date of recognition of disability if the date is on or after reaching age 20).

Note 1:
"First medical examination" refers to is the date when a person received a medical examination for the regarding sickness or an injury from a physician or dentist for the first time.

Note 2:
"Date of recognition of disability" refers to the date after 1 year and 6 months from the first visit or the date when the symptoms have been stabilized(Note 3), whichever occurs first.

Note 3:
"Date when the symptoms have been stabilized" refers to dates such as the date 3 months after the person starts to be treated with dialysis, the date when he/she has an artificial valve or pacemaker inserted, or the date 6 months after he/she has an artificial anus implanted or has urinary diversion.

Payment requirement of insurance premiums

On the date before the date of the first medical examination, the total periods during which insurance premiums were paid and periods during which the premiums were exempted must be 2/3 or more of the National Pension Insured Persons period up to 2 months before the month of the first medical examination.

However, when the first medical examination date is before April 1, 2026, the premiums payment requirement is considered to be met if there were no periods of unpaid insurance premiums for 1 year up to 2 months before the month of the first medical examination.

Disability Basic Pension

  • Grade 1 972,250 yen
  • Grade 2 777,800 yen

Additional amount for children

  • 1st/2nd child (per child)  223,800 yen
  • 3rd/subsequent child (per child)  74,600 yen

Note:
Subjects of this additional amount for children are children dependent for full support who have not reached the end of the fiscal year at age 18 or are under age 20 with Disability Grade 1 or 2.
